In 2019, while faced with some hard realities about my mental health, I moved into a deeper studio practice. Early in the year, I discovered the number 108 in my yoga class. It’s a number used in Buddhism to focus the mind on meditation - often held by a string of 108 beads. Since then, I have been drawn to the number and its symbolism. I marked 108 days from my birthday (Oct 16) to my February 1st. These 108 days include the Winter Solstice (December 21) celebration that I have been honoring with an art piece since 2006. Recently, I discovered Imbolc, a holiday that has been overshadowed by a groundhog (??!!!), from sundown February 1st to sundown February 2nd. I couldn’t pass up including this tradition and adding it to one of the 108 coincidences to this creative effort. Imbolc honors what we can’t see and trusts in Springs return. I live with depression. For me, Winter can feel hard, long, cold and dark. It helps to have traditions to push me along.
